The gaming industry continues its development, and as the technology advances – so do new ideas come alongside it, allowing for the development of next-gen titles that look better, run smoother, and offer amazing new experiences. With that said, the imagination of the developers is what truly captivates the players, which is why Gunzilla Games decided to create a new, highly innovative game called Off The Grid.

What is the game about?

According to the press release that the company shared, Off The Grid (OTG) will be a new AAA Battle Royale TPS (Third Person Shooter) that will take place in a dystopian future, with a cyberpunk-styled aesthetic. The game is expected to come out in 2023, and it will be playable on PlayStation 5, Xbox X and S, as well as PC.

However, what makes this game stand out from the rest is its strong emphasis on narrative progression. As most players know, Battle Royale games tend to focus more on the shooting part, where players fight other players with the ultimate goal of being the last one standing. This game, however, will be like no other.

It will still feature 150 players, let into the game’s vast world, who will engage in PvP skirmishes, while also trying to survive and adapt in the environment. However, players will also have something new this time, which is storyline missions that they will be tasked with completing along the way, as they run around trying to remove competition.

Players will also have the freedom to control how the hard-boiled story unfolds, but each decision that they make as they play will affect the world, as well as other players. This way, everyone’s gameplay will be unique every time they play, especially with the players’ ability to craft, customize, and trade items that they find or make in the game.

The survival element will still be strong and immediately noticeable, but the developers wish to make the players’ decisions matter in the game’s world, and for them to be able to make a change and feel like they did something that will impact not only them, but the other players and their gameplay, as well.

A Battle Royale 2.0

So far, it was revealed that the project is led by Chief Visionary Officer Neill Blomkamp and Script Writer Richard K. Morgan. However, the team also consists of other talents from all over the gaming industry, including Olivier Henriot, who previously worked on major hits such as Far Cry and Assassin’s Creed.

Commenting on the new game, Blomkamp said that the goal is to create something more than just a Battle Royale 2.0. While revolutionizing the genre is important to the developers, which is why player progression is being added, they also wish to build a world that is designed to evolve and take on a life of its own. In this world, players will have a huge impact, and their decisions will be changing it in unexpected ways.

Each time when a player joins the game, the game will be slightly different from when they last logged off. The CVO added that “With an innovative approach to the Battle Royale core session flow and a deep narrative experience, we add purpose to each element of the game, allowing players to revisit the OTG world repeatedly where there is always something new to find and explore, and for us to expand upon.”

In other words, this will be a game whose evolution will be happening constantly, whether due to the players’ decisions or the developers’ contributions. As such, it will revolutionize the Battle Royale genre, and potentially set the foundation for the development of similar, more interactive games in the future.
